Overview
The site presents a great opportunity to contribute to Medway Council’s ambitious regeneration plans which will transform Medway in the foreseeable future. Plans for Borough Wharf Medway submitted
Proposals have been submitted to Medway Council for a new residential development on the site of the Grays of Chatham car dealership on Chatham High Street.
Called Borough Wharf Medway, the plans include the development of 152 one- and two-bedroom apartments. These would be divided between six individual brick-built blocks designed to be sympathetic to the local architecture of the site and estuary, with links through to the river.
The Borough Wharf Medway proposals, which are a 10-minute walk away from Chatham and Rochester town centres, have been brought forward by Option Two Development Ltd, a subsidiary of leading property company Domus.
The plan is to reinstate a residential frontage to the High Street by replacing the used car dealership and a small two-storey dilapidated Victorian warehouse, and other buildings, which are currently surrounded by a large expanse of hardstanding.
To sustain the local Victorian architecture, the proposed development wraps around the turreted four-storey 21 Chatham High Street, a mid-19th Century former public house and currently a fast food takeaway, and beyond the ownership of Borough Wharf.
Matt Etheridge, representative for the applicant, who is leading on the Borough Wharf project, said: “The proposals provide a fantastic opportunity to reinstate the High Street, and better reflect the area’s architectural riverfront character.
“Designed during the pandemic, Borough Wharf has embraced emerging trends for work-life balance and how the relationship between home and office may change in the future, with an onsite function room and gymnasium being part of our proposals.”

Work on the project began in November 2019 when the developers first met council planning officers and the design process for Borough Wharf has involved an independent Design Review Panel, Historic England, the planners, conservation and design officers and Medway Council Ward Members.

Plans for Borough Wharf Medway submitted
Proposals have been submitted to Medway Council for a new residential development on the site of the Grays of Chatham car dealership on Chatham High Street.
Called Borough Wharf Medway, the plans include the development of 152 one- and two-bedroom apartments. These would be divided between six individual brick-built blocks designed to be sympathetic to the local architecture of the site and estuary, with links through to the river.
The Borough Wharf Medway proposals, which are a 10-minute walk away from Chatham and Rochester town centres, have been brought forward by Option Two Development Ltd, a subsidiary of leading property company Domus.
The plan is to reinstate a residential frontage to the High Street by replacing the used car dealership and a small two-storey dilapidated Victorian warehouse, and other buildings, which are currently surrounded by a large expanse of hardstanding.
To sustain the local Victorian architecture, the proposed development wraps around the turreted four-storey 21 Chatham High Street, a mid-19th Century former public house and currently a fast food takeaway, and beyond the ownership of Borough Wharf.
Matt Etheridge, representative for the applicant, who is leading on the Borough Wharf project, said: “The proposals provide a fantastic opportunity to reinstate the High Street, and better reflect the area’s architectural riverfront character.
“Designed during the pandemic, Borough Wharf has embraced emerging trends for work-life balance and how the relationship between home and office may change in the future, with an onsite function room and gymnasium being part of our proposals.”
