Petworth is situated in the very heart of West Sussex and is a natural crossroads, of ancient roads from north to south, Guildford to Chichester and from east to west, Steyning and Storrington to Midhurst and Petersfield. It is in the very centre of the South Downs National Park and is a medieval market town, serving the local area, surrounded and blessed by the rolling hills of the North and South Downs and the valley of the River Rother. It has a diverse population of just over 3000.
Central to Petworth is Petworth House, a stately home which was built in the 1690’s and the town has developed around its walls. The house, grounds and park are owned and maintained by the National Trust, but Lord and Lady Egremont still occupy part of the house. Many houses in Petworth are owned by the Petworth and Leconfield Estate and this, with the surrounding country estate has had a critical influence on the town and the surrounding area.
Petworth Park covers an area of approximately 700 acres and is famous for its herds of deer. Two lakes feature within the park, the home of swans, migrating geese and many wildfowl. There are stunning views in all directions. Petworth House originally had formal gardens, with stables, from the western façade but Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was employed in the 1750’s to redesign the gardens, creating lakes, hillocks with viewpoints across the surrounding countryside. Stone urns were placed within the landscape at focal points and each links one to the other. Ancient oak trees are a feature of the park, one being noted as being over 900 years old!
Petworth House, the park and the local area became the inspiration for famous landscape artists, including Turner and Constable, who were generously supported by the Egremont family and many of their paintings are displayed within the house, where Turner’s studio still remains.

Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin.
The current building dates from the 14th century.
It has undergone extensive restoration over the years. Inside, the ancient font has been in use for over six hundred years. One of the highlights in the Churches Calendar Year is the stunning and beautiful Corpus Christi Carpet of Flowers which takes place in June.
The display then culminates in a service on the following Sunday.

Petworth Community Allotments are located on the West Side of Petworth
Vacant allotments have been rented by families during C.V.19 lockdown. An opportunity to grow vegetables/fruit /flowers for family and friends.
Young children have been busy helping and learning about gardening from their parents. Other allotment holders have been on hand to answers questions, swapping tips and plants, making a very social event for all ages.
Squeals of delight from the children can be heard seeing the produce growing and tasting it straight from the cane’s raspberries or peas from the pod. Encouraging the children at an early age to eat healthily and having the satisfaction of growing their own vegetables and fruit for dinner.

Fred's Banks is positioned along Station Road opposite the Fire Station on the Southern Gateway to Petworth
It was advised by last year judges to define the area better, so a fence has been erected. Plus, shrubs on the fence line such as Elaeagnus Variegate and Phlomis, Valerian and Oregano were added to the bed. The middle area left for nature to evolve encouraging a habitat for insects, butterflies and wildflowers to flourish. This is part of the green corridor which surrounds Petworth.
FIRE STATION
Maintained as a THANK YOU to the firemen for watering Fred’s Bank. They were going to help in Rosemary Gardens in March ,the planned work was cancelled. The existing beds were weeded, pruned and forked over. Soil from the summer planters was added to improve the beds. Spare and donated plants were added Geraniums, Achemella Mollis, Wallflowers, Michaelmas Daisies, Primula, Sisyrinchium Striatum, Hollyhocks, Iiatris Spicateand and Spotted Dead Nettle to name a few. A variety of daffodils Vanilla Cream, Sweetheart have been added to the front grass of the Fire Station for the second year running to brighten up the area.

Petworth Primary School is the only school in Petworth Town.
At the start of the spring term we had a meeting with the headmaster, asking if the children would like to make bug hotels and milk bottle planters. This was agreed but due to CV 19 and government guidelines, it was changed.
We were invited to see what the few children had been doing. The vegetable patch was larger and full of produce, e.g. tomatoes, peas, radish and lettuce.
The new wildlife conservation area with bog garden started last year by the children was busy with butterflies and insects. Work had started on an outdoor classroom; the ground was being cleared for future development. We plan to plant the entrance to the school with a variety of bulbs in the autumn.

Our BIG project for this year was to plant up the top end of Rosemary Gardens.
Work was planned to start on 21st and 28th March which was cancelled. We intend to resume the work in the autumn. The plants and shrubs for that area have been planted elsewhere e.g. lower part of Rosemary Gardens and Sheepdown. Larger shrubs are being looked after in Volunteers gardens.

The Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church for the people of Petworth, and surrounding villages in West Sussex.
In 1893 Charles Willock Dawes brought the site, commissioned Frederick Walters to design the church. It is modelled on the Sacred Heart Church in Hove. Construction cost £15,000 and was ready in 1896 for worshippers.
It is situated on Angel Street to the north of Petworth Cottage Museum in the centre of the town. It is a Gothic Revival church and a Grade II listed building.
Sheepdown Gateway
Gateway to Petworth from the East and now has two beds. Planted up with Camassia Quamash, Queen of Sweden roses, Grasses, Iris Histriodes, Allium to name but a few. Bulbs Tulips Negreta, China Pink and Raspberry Ripple, for an early burst of colour at the end of the winter months.
Cricket Lodge is located at the West Gateway to Petworth.
It is an area planted for low maintenance.
Also, plants which can tolerant dry conditions and winds e.g. Veronica Spiked Speedwell, Sea Holly, Alliums, Salvia, Bugbane white and red. Tulips yellow -Vanilla cream and Sweetheart for early colour.
Greatly admired by passers-by visiting the park for recreation.

Petworth Park covers an area of approximately 700 acres and is famous for its herds of deer. Two lakes feature within the park, the home of swans, migrating geese and many wildfowl. There are stunning views in all directions. Petworth House originally had formal gardens, with stables, from the western façade but Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was employed in the 1750’s to redesign the gardens, creating lakes, hillocks with viewpoints across the surrounding countryside. Stone urns were placed within the landscape at focal points and each links one to the other. Ancient oak trees are a feature of the park, one being noted as being over 900 years old!
Petworth House, the park and the local area became the inspiration for famous landscape artists, including Turner and Constable, who were generously supported by the Egremont family and many of their paintings are displayed within the house, where Turner’s studio still remains.

Petworth is situated in the very heart of West Sussex and is a natural crossroads, of ancient roads from north to south, Guildford to Chichester and from east to west, Steyning and Storrington to Midhurst and Petersfield. It is in the very centre of the South Downs National Park and is a medieval market town, serving the local area, surrounded and blessed by the rolling hills of the North and South Downs and the valley of the River Rother. It has a diverse population of just over 3000.
Central to Petworth is Petworth House, a stately home which was built in the 1690’s and the town has developed around its walls. The house, grounds and park are owned and maintained by the National Trust, but Lord and Lady Egremont still occupy part of the house. Many houses in Petworth are owned by the Petworth and Leconfield Estate and this, with the surrounding country estate has had a critical influence on the town and the surrounding area.

LOMBARD STREET
Information
A beautiful cobbled street leading from Market Square to St Marys Church.
It was once the main shopping street for Petworth with haberdashers, bakers, grocers and butchers.
The cobbled Lombard Street now enjoys a more sedate existence, lined with restaurants, antique shops and homes featuring court yards gardens.
Owners have placed planters with Olive & Bay Trees and window boxes filled with variety of colourful bedding plants to enhance the walkway.
GOLDEN SQUARE
It used to be known as the “Beast Market” but was re-named after the Golden Square in London. Apparently, the beasts were mostly pigs. Today it is worth stopping and taking in the display of hanging baskets and planters above the shops. A vibrant splash of colour in which at times can be a shady corner. Provided by the local flower shop on the corner of Golden Square and maintained throughout the summer months.
HIGH STREET
At the bottom of the High Street is a unique corner leading to the Market Square, Shopping Arcade, Rosemary Gardens and Carpark.

As a Market Town, Petworth would always have had a market square of some type since Tudor times perhaps even earlier.
Today it is surrounded by shops, businesses and accommodations with Leconfield Hall to one side.
The square is used for the monthly market, selling local produce. (June’s took place in the carpark to conform to Government Guidelines.)
Famously Petworth fair held on November the 20th on St Edmunds Day (if falls on a Sunday then changed to 19th) The Petworth Fair is the last annual Fair in Sussex to survive and remains at the invitation of the present Lord Egremont.

Due to lack of light and height, planting had to be careful considered for the conditions. Planted up for the summer with Begonias, Helichrysum silver, Petunia coconut and Petunia shock wave to enhance the area.

Petworth is a picturesque market town nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park, just over an hour’s drive from London and only 30 minutes from the south coast. The town has many treasures to discover making it a day out to remember.
Like many of the West Sussex market towns, Petworth is in touch with its history and is mostly well-preserved. There are some good old houses in the Town. Some are really grand like Daintrey House with a Georgian facade built onto the pre-existing Elizabethan house. Other houses are cute and slightly rickety in appearance and many are tile hung in the traditional Sussex way. The overall effect is very attractive and makes Petworth a pleasant place for tourists to spend a few hours.

ALLOTMENTS
Information
Petworth Community Allotments are located on the West Side of Petworth
Vacant allotments have been rented by families during C.V.19 lockdown. An opportunity to grow vegetables/fruit /flowers for family and friends.
Young children have been busy helping and learning about gardening from their parents. Other allotment holders have been on hand to answers questions, swapping tips and plants, making a very social event for all ages.
Squeals of delight from the children can be heard seeing the produce growing and tasting it straight from the cane’s raspberries or peas from the pod. Encouraging the children at an early age to eat healthily and having the satisfaction of growing their own vegetables and fruit for dinner.
PETWORTH PRIMARY CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL

Petworth Primary School is the only school in Petworth Town.
At the start of the spring term we had a meeting with the headmaster, asking if the children would like to make bug hotels and milk bottle planters. This was agreed but due to CV 19 and government guidelines, it was changed.
We were invited to see what the few children had been doing. The vegetable patch was larger and full of produce, e.g. tomatoes, peas, radish and lettuce.
The new wildlife conservation area with bog garden started last year by the children was busy with butterflies and insects. Work had started on an outdoor classroom; the ground was being cleared for future development. We plan to plant the entrance to the school with a variety of bulbs in the autumn.

ROSEMARY GARDENS
Information
Our BIG project for this year was to plant up the top end of Rosemary Gardens.
Work was planned to start on 21st and 28th March which was cancelled. We intend to resume the work in the autumn. The plants and shrubs for that area have been planted elsewhere e.g. lower part of Rosemary Gardens and Sheepdown. Larger shrubs are being looked after in Volunteers gardens.
Shrubs which would have been plants in Rosemary Gardens
are; Salvia. Amistad, Chrisyc Ternata, Skimmia Rubella, Trachelospermum Jasminoides, Abelia, Clerodendrum Bungei, Viburnum Tinus, Queen of Sweden , Lady of the lake, Philadelphus.
FREDS BANK & THE FIRE STATION
Information
Fred's Banks is positioned along Station Road opposite the Fire Station on the Southern Gateway to Petworth
It was advised by last year judges to define the area better, so a fence has been erected. Plus, shrubs on the fence line such as Elaeagnus Variegate and Phlomis, Valerian and Oregano were added to the bed. The middle area left for nature to evolve encouraging a habitat for insects, butterflies and wildflowers to flourish. This is part of the green corridor which surrounds Petworth.
FIRE STATION
Maintained as a THANK YOU to the firemen for watering Fred’s Bank. They were going to help in Rosemary Gardens in March ,the planned work was cancelled. The existing beds were weeded, pruned and forked over. Soil from the summer planters was added to improve the beds. Spare and donated plants were added Geraniums, Achemella Mollis, Wallflowers, Michaelmas Daisies, Primula, Sisyrinchium Striatum, Hollyhocks, Iiatris Spicateand and Spotted Dead Nettle to name a few. A variety of daffodils Vanilla Cream, Sweetheart have been added to the front grass of the Fire Station for the second year running to brighten up the area.

PETWORTH IN BLOOM
Information
Petworth in Bloom regularly collates information and photographs about the local environment, our community involvement in events, Petworth horticulture, its heritage and the art in the landscape. This includes photographs of volunteers in action, past planting schemes etc. This information is stored in folders, both instructional and for inspirational use for talks past, present and for reference in the future. Petworth in Bloom/ Gardeners Club events are included, such as the talk and visit from hedgehogs in November 2019 and is a way of storing information in pictorial form. Colour boards illustrating planting schemes and planned work are produced several times a year and are presented to the town council and are on display at fund raising events.
This year, Petworth has produced a monthly ‘events calendar’ which documents and illustrates activities by Petworth in Bloom volunteers in the past year. It is intended that this will be produced month by month, for public display.
Petworth in Bloom is partially funded by the Town Council but also substantially by private donations and clubs. Up until October 2019 it was also funded by the Petworth Business Association. ‘In Bloom’ volunteers also run coffee mornings three times a year, in the Leconfield Hall, to coincide with the Farmers’ Market, baking cakes for the event and serving refreshments. This year our late Spring coffee morning was cancelled due to the corona virus. Other funds have been raised by making face masks when none could be obtained locally. They are stocked in the hardware store with donations to Petworth in Bloom.

Petworth House originally had formal gardens, with stables, from the western façade but Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown was employed in the 1750’s to redesign the gardens, creating lakes, hillocks with viewpoints across the surrounding countryside. Stone urns were placed within the landscape at focal points and each links one to the other. Ancient oak trees are a feature of the park, one being noted as being over 900 years old!
Petworth House, the park and the local area became the inspiration for famous landscape artists, including Turner and Constable, who were generously supported by the Egremont family and many of their paintings are displayed within the house, where Turner’s studio still remains.
MARKET SQUARE
Information
As a Market Town, Petworth would always have had a market square of some type since Tudor times perhaps even earlier.
Today it is surrounded by shops, businesses and accommodations with Leconfield Hall to one side.
The square is used for the monthly market, selling local produce. (June’s took place in the carpark to conform to Government Guidelines.)
Famously Petworth fair held on November the 20th on St Edmunds Day (if falls on a Sunday then changed to 19th) The Petworth Fair is the last annual Fair in Sussex to survive and remains at the invitation of the present Lord Egremont.

Petworth In Bloom 2020
Information
Petworth in Bloom regularly collates information and photographs about the local environment, our community involvement in events, Petworth horticulture, its heritage and the art in the landscape. This includes photographs of volunteers in action, past planting schemes etc. This information is stored in folders, both instructional and for inspirational use for talks past, present and for reference in the future. Petworth in Bloom/ Gardeners Club events are included, such as the talk and visit from hedgehogs in November 2019 and is a way of storing information in pictorial form. Colour boards illustrating planting schemes and planned work are produced several times a year and are presented to the town council and are on display at fund raising events.
This year, Petworth has produced a monthly ‘events calendar’ which documents and illustrates activities by Petworth in Bloom volunteers in the past year. It is intended that this will be produced month by month, for public display.
Petworth in Bloom is partially funded by the Town Council but also substantially by private donations and clubs. Up until October 2019 it was also funded by the Petworth Business Association. ‘In Bloom’ volunteers also run coffee mornings three times a year, in the Leconfield Hall, to coincide with the Farmers’ Market, baking cakes for the event and serving refreshments. This year our late Spring coffee morning was cancelled due to the corona virus. Other funds have been raised by making face masks when none could be obtained locally. They are stocked in the hardware store with donations to Petworth in Bloom.
ST MARY THE VIRGIN CHURCH
Information
Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin.
The current building dates from the 14th century.
It has undergone extensive restoration over the years. Inside, the ancient font has been in use for over six hundred years. One of the highlights in the Churches Calendar Year is the stunning and beautiful Corpus Christi Carpet of Flowers which takes place in June.
The display then culminates in a service on the following Sunday.
LOMBARD STREET
Information
A beautiful cobbled street leading from Market Square to St Marys Church.
It was once the main shopping street for Petworth with haberdashers, bakers, grocers and butchers.
The cobbled Lombard Street now enjoys a more sedate existence, lined with restaurants, antique shops and homes featuring court yards gardens.
Owners have placed planters with Olive & Bay Trees and window boxes filled with variety of colourful bedding plants to enhance the walkway.
On the junction of church street and east street stands a cast iron monument. The lamp standard was designed by Sir Charles Barry (who designed the Houses of Parliament) Dates from 1830 when Lord Egremont paid for a gas supply into town, as a thank you the monument was commissioned.
Ron came to Petworth with The Royal Signals during WWII. He was attached to No.1 Commando Brigade and was based here for several months during the preparations for the Normandy landings.
It was while at Petworth that Ron made many lifelong friends and met his future wife Sheila who was the daughter of a local carrier and garage owner.
Ron spent 40 years working for the then G.P.O as an engineer and despite moving to Horsham he retained strong links with Petworth where he was well known as a skilled calligrapher and a talented artist as well as a keen supporter of The Petworth Society.
Sadly Ron passed away in 2013 aged 93 followed by Sheila in May 2020.

On Tuesday the 29th September 1942 at 10 25 am a lone german bomber aiming its bombs at the troops in
Petworth House grounds ,missed their intended target .Falling onto the boys’ school and nearby laundry ,
there was no air raid warning. Eighty children were at school that day, twenty eight were killed also the
headmaster and a teacher many were injured .The Canadian and Polish troops from the park were soon
on the scene to help. The boys’ and the teachers are at rest in a nearby cemetery ,where every year a
service takes place on September the 29th.
